I am back on the mainland and blogging from Seattle with South Austin in the rearview mirror. Don't worry Virgin Island fans, I will most certainly be back in the Caribbean for visits if not full-time. And I'm sure St. Thomas will creep it's way into many future posts. For now, it's all about living in the Pacific Northwest!

You're right... that is a stupid question! part 1

There is a popular and compassionate view that there are no stupid questions, I beg to differ. I began a list of stupid questions several years ago when I first moved here to St. Thomas. I will refer to this list for future posts, of that I am sure.

One question asked of me nearly every day while living and working here on St. Thomas has been "Do you live here"? I find it odd that someone would ask that question of you while you were performing your jobly functions to earn a paycheck. Would you ask a police officer "do you live here"? How about a waitress? A bank teller? I have friends doing all these jobs here in St. Thomas and they have all been asked that question while they were working.

Do they think that I commute from Puerto Rico? Texas? Through the well known tunnel from Miami to St. Thomas? To start my day on this boat at 5am? Maybe they meant to ask if I actually lived "here" as in on the boat? The forty-four foot power boat is clearly not a live-a-board or homey in any respect. More likely they meant to say "do you live here year round"? The point is that they do NOT ask that. They ask "do you live here"?

Just this morning I said a brief "hello" to a customer. She said in a startled and accusing way "you sound like an American... but you can't be". I confirm for her that yes I am an American. She doesn't buy it. "Where are you from in America?", she queried. "I'm from Austin, Texas", I countered. She then asked another of my favorite stupid questions: "How did you get here?"
