I am back on the mainland and blogging from Seattle with South Austin in the rearview mirror. Don't worry Virgin Island fans, I will most certainly be back in the Caribbean for visits if not full-time. And I'm sure St. Thomas will creep it's way into many future posts. For now, it's all about living in the Pacific Northwest!

Austin gets a snow day!

Like many people from North of the Mason Dixon Line, I used to think that Texans' reaction to snow and ice could be a bit dramatic. With the mere hint of a winter storm, Texans flock to grocery stores to stock up on everything from milk to hair gel in the event that what? That the storm last a month? Here? Has never happened. Will never happen. I didn't get it. Maybe the fear is warranted? Even if you feel confident in your ability to navigate the roadway, can you trust others?  This video was shot in front of my house on South Lamar this morning...

While I still think there are those that act out of some irrational fear of these rare conditions, I have adjusted my opinion to a much more optimistic point of view. It's more like a central Texas version of a hurricane party. While some stock up on necessities for a long shut in, others are stocking up on spirits from Specs, and gladly accepting the excuse to enjoy the snow day without any of the guilt that goes along with skipping out on the obligations of work and responsibility. I join the latter group in my unfettered excitement for this snow day!

  1. I'd like to say that its a great day to stock up on spirits... but who goes to Specs to do so? Not me! I go to Twin Liquors where the Customer Service ROCKS!
